Board approves lease with Anet’s Charities to provide veteran transitional housing and parking

South Strabane supervisors voted to approve a lease agreement with Anet’s Charities Inc. to use a portion of the property at 99 Main Street for parking to support Billy Bell Park while the charity proceeds with renovating the former laboratory school into veteran housing and service space.
Joe Chenelly, representing Anet’s Charities, told the board the organization intends to convert the school into apartments and community rooms that can keep veteran families together during transitional housing placements, provide free claims/representation and legal services, and offer training and job opportunities. He said the organization plans to relocate its national headquarters into the county and expects to create local jobs.
Under the terms described at the meeting, the township will continue mowing a grass lot between the parking and the school while Anet’s Charities provides parking spaces; the board approved the lease unanimously.
Board members expressed appreciation for the organization’s community focus and asked about on-site supervision; Chenelly said they expect to have at least two staff on site. The lease allows the township to address longtime parking shortages at Billy Bell Park while the charity moves forward with its property plans.
