The Kill Devil Hills Board approved a recommended timeline on Jan. 12 to fill the vacant board seat left by the late Commissioner Terry Gray. The town manager outlined the proposed schedule: applications due Monday, Feb. 2; clerk forwards eligible applications Feb. 9; board review and possible nomination/ballot selection at the March 9 meeting; swearing-in March 25 if an appointment is made. The appointed commissioner’s term would run through Dec. 2027, with voters choosing who will serve the remaining two years in the Nov. 2027 municipal election.
In related business the board reappointed Becky Brieholtz to her planning-board seat and appointed Shannon MacArthur to a vacant planning-board seat after reviewing four applications. The motions were approved by voice vote.
Discussion also covered whether to delay appointments to the town’s government-access channel and the Dare County tourism board until the commission vacancy is filled so the new appointee could be considered; commissioners tentatively agreed to revisit those appointments at the March meeting to avoid prolonged gaps in representation.
Staff said applications will be accepted through the town website and that the clerk will forward eligible candidates to the board for review.
