Council presents art and scholarship awards; public comment highlights Pride month request and neighborhood concerns

Public Services staff presented the third annual Mayor’s Art Contest (81 submissions including 28 youth entries) and the Matlook Scholarship Foundation awarded six $5,000 scholarships to graduating students or transfer students pursuing STEM fields. Council members congratulated winners and urged recipients to stay engaged with the community.
During the public‑comment period, Ashley (representing Rise Paris Pride) urged the council to refrain from hosting a Harry Potter‑branded event at the Southern California Railway Museum because of concerns about statements by the author and requested a Pride Month proclamation for June. Another Rise Paris Pride speaker echoed the request and publicized upcoming community events.
Later in the meeting residents who live near the Acacia Point site testified in more detail about alleged construction damage, parking impacts and traffic concerns. Several urged the council to require stronger mitigation or to deny the project; the council subsequently denied the proposal.
