Orange County district attorney team presents GRIP anti-gang program outcomes to board

Senior Deputy District Attorney Shannon Bach and GRIP investigators presented the Orange County Gang Reduction and Intervention Partnership (GRIP) program to the county board, citing a KCAL feature and internal outcome measures as evidence of program impact.

Bach said GRIP coordinates schools, law enforcement and community partners to identify vulnerable students and intervene before gang involvement escalates. The team presented program statistics they said were drawn from pre- and post-program surveys: roughly 91% of participating youth reported increased resiliency, parents reported a 70% increase in family functioning among those who received services, 99% of faculty reported improved knowledge from GRIP training, and 94% of prevention referrals resulted in linkage to services.

Investigators described a two-tiered service model: GRIP 1 offers intensive, full-time investigator/mentor staffing in selected schools; GRIP 2 relies on volunteer deputy district attorneys and probation officers to extend coverage to more sites. Presenters said staffing and funding shortages limit how quickly GRIP can expand despite a substantial wait list of interested schools.

Trustees thanked the presenters and asked about enrollment and scaling; presenters reiterated that additional staffing and stable funding would be needed to expand intensive services.

OCDE staff recorded the presentation for the agenda; the board did not take action but acknowledged the program's role supporting school safety and student pathways.
