Staff presented a package of proposed new positions and supplemental-compensation changes at the McAllen ISD budget workshop on May 27, arguing the additions respond to program growth and retention concerns.
Among the proposed hires were a Teacher Incentive Allotment coordinator (to be funded with TIA money), a CTE barber teacher, a Medicaid clerk, an additional counselor for special-education caseloads, a physical therapist to serve about 103 students, a middle-school mariachi teacher, and a bond project manager. Staff said some positions will be covered in more detail at the district’s next meeting and that the project manager job description would be discussed at the bond update session.
Staff also proposed a range of stipend increases and flexible stipend authority for athletics and extracurriculars: increasing cheerleading stipends to $8,700, matching assistant dance stipends to $5,500, raising part-time athletic rates and adding flexible stipends for sports with large rosters (e.g., wrestling, powerlifting). Staff compared McAllen’s assistant-coach counts to surrounding districts and said the proposed changes would move McAllen closer to peer staffing levels.
The board did not vote on staffing proposals at the workshop; staff said some items would return for action and that athletic and bond items would be included in upcoming agenda packets.
