Maplewood committee appoints three residents to Community Board on Police

The Maplewood Township Committee voted unanimously to appoint three residents to the Maplewood Community Board on Police on February 3. The committee approved three-year terms ending December 31, 2028, for Diana Cammon, Sophie Johnson and Peter Sheik.

Mr. Daffis announced the three nominees and gave each an opportunity to speak. Diana Cammon said she would bring research skills, volunteer experience with a prison oversight organization and “an open mind collaborative spirit” to the board. Sophie Johnson introduced herself as a Maplewood resident and said she hoped to “get active and just be a part of the healing and light” in the community. Peter Sheik described public service as “an exercise in collective care” and said he wanted to encourage more residents to participate.

Committee members moved and seconded each appointment in turn. Mr. Daffis moved Cammon’s appointment and the roll call showed unanimous approval; the same vote pattern followed for Johnson and Sheik. Mayor Duca and committee members congratulated the new appointees and noted that each will receive their first meeting notices promptly.

The appointments were part of a longer agenda that included a proclamation recognizing Black History Month and a range of administrative and public-health items.

The committee recorded the votes by roll call; the appointments were approved without recorded dissents.
