Staff reports progress on park bond projects: fields, shade structures, fountains and trail repaving

Town staff updated the board on progress funded by the park bond: Dogwood West field renovations and access gates, delivered shade structures, new ADA- and dog-friendly drinking fountains for Thomas Centennial and Chesterton parks, court resurfacing at Waskom Park and a first paving phase planned for the Prairie Duneland Trail.
Tyler, the parks staff lead, told the board several park bond-funded projects are underway and outlined short-term next steps and funding arrangements.
He said field renovations at Dogwood West are in progress and that the town is installing maintenance gates to improve contractor access. "We're actually working on some fence improvements now ... to get some maintenance gates installed there at those fields to help make the access to them a little more convenient for the contractor," Tyler said.
Tyler reported the town took delivery of shade structures and approved the bill; site furnishings for the splash pad (tables, benches, trash receptacles) have also been upgraded. He added that staff "ordered two drinking fountains ... they'll have the bi-level standing height, the ADA height, the dog fountain and the bottle filler," to be placed at Thomas Centennial Park and Chesterton Park following a suggestion from the sustainability commission to reduce bottle waste near the pickleball area.
On trail work, Tyler described the Prairie Duneland Trail repaving project’s first phase (Jackson Boulevard to Pearson Road) and said funding will be split about 50/50 between bond proceeds and a partner the council approved at its March 23 meeting. He said Coffee Creek boardwalk improvements are in early design and contingent on receiving the Lake Michigan Coastal Program grant agreement.
Staff said they plan to install the shade structures and fountains soon and will bring grant-related items back to the board when agreements arrive.
