Butler Art Institute hosts commissioners; sheriff unveils new Bearcat armored vehicle

"I'm Rebecca Davis. I'm the development director here at the Butler," Davis said, describing the museum’s 1919 founding and noting the Butler received a state humanities grant to present Joseph G. Butler collections as part of the America 250 observance. She called the museum "a jewel in the valley" and highlighted the institution’s draw for cultural tourists from northeast Ohio and beyond.
Later in the meeting, Sheriff Jerry Green introduced a Bearcat armored vehicle parked outside, describing it as a needed replacement for an armored vehicle that was about 22–23 years old and for which replacement parts were no longer available. "The SWAT team... falls under the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office, but it's multi-county, multi-jurisdictional task force," Green said, explaining the vehicle will serve both county and regional public-safety operations. Sergeant Jeff Saluga was on the dais as a member of the county’s CRT/SWAT team.
Green thanked the commissioners for supporting public-safety needs and described the procurement as intended to improve safety for residents across Mahoning County and participating jurisdictions. Commissioners and attendees praised the Butler and the museum staff for hosting the meeting and highlighted community programming tied to the America 250 celebration, including courthouse tours and display of a 1905 time capsule.
What’s next: Commissioners invited attendees to view the Butler’s America 250 exhibition after the meeting and to inspect the armored vehicle parked outside; county staff will continue contract and procurement follow-up as needed.
