At its March 25 meeting the Essex Energy Committee advanced plans to pursue electric-vehicle charging infrastructure under NEVI-related programs, naming the Sand Hill pool parking lot as an early candidate for a bank of four chargers.
Committee members said NEVI offers funding opportunities for highway-adjacent host sites and that the town's role would mostly be to complete host surveys and handle limited responsibilities such as legal review and maintenance obligations. Sean Mimon reported he had completed a host survey for one location and identified at least two other potential sites. Will Dodge said the pool lot is attractive because it is large, well-lit, and used for extended stays; the committee also discussed park-and-ride and Indian Brook lots as additional candidates.
Members discussed permit and ongoing maintenance costs and noted that some federal/state programs provide dealer or installer support for installation and early maintenance; after five years the town may assume greater responsibility for upkeep. Committee members asked staff to follow up with Ann Janda and Green Mountain Power contacts to clarify charger type (fast vs. slow), three-phase power availability, permit obligations, and lease or host terms.
Next steps: finish NEVI host surveys, confirm candidate sites and power availability, and coordinate with town staff and Green Mountain Power on potential installations.
