Measure S updates: design plans for RUHS Innovation building and Seahawk Bowl concourse

SVA Architects presented the next phase of Measure S projects at Redondo Union High School, describing two primary efforts: a two-story Innovation & Design building and improvements to the Seahawk Bowl upper concourse.

Doug Brown of SVA Architects outlined the Innovation & Design building as a roughly 19,000-square-foot, two-story classroom facility with six adaptable classrooms, a media/arts lab, aerospace and coding labs, flexible breakout spaces and a presentation hall with seating for about 140. The building site would require removal of the existing structure on Diamond Street and would step down roughly 20 feet across the site, requiring ramps and steps, and would tie into a campus plaza adjacent to the cafeteria.

Brown said the project is in design development, moving to construction documents and targeting a DSA submittal in November; the team anticipates a DSA review window, bidding and a demolition start in June 2027 so work can occur over summer and minimize classroom disruption. Construction was estimated at roughly 23 months with occupancy targeted for the fall semester after completion.

On the Seahawk Bowl project, the architect described reconfiguring restrooms to improve pedestrian flow, adding a monumental entry gate and upgraded lighting to support evening events. The plan would relocate restrooms to the west and east concourses and add separate single-occupancy all-gender restrooms. The team said the timeline is assertive, with DSA and bidding to precede a construction window after football season with completion aimed before graduation; staff noted contingency planning for weather impacts.

Board members thanked the team and noted the visibility of these projects to the community; no formal vote was required on the presentation, but staff will continue cost estimating and schedule coordination.
