Student advisory council unveils student-designed 'portrait of a graduate' and pushes for food, safety and device changes

Members of Redondo Beach Unified’s Student Advisory Council presented eight goals including cafeteria menu changes, fountain cleanings, e-bike racks, a refillable water-bottle campaign and a student-created 'portrait of a graduate.' The board recognized the group and distributed certificates.
Dr. Nicole Wesley introduced members of the Student Advisory Council (SACE) and said the group meets regularly with district leaders to recommend changes to improve student experience.
"This presentation summarized how we work towards all of these goals," SACE member Jasine Gardado said, listing eight districtwide priorities the group pursued this year, from elementary- to secondary-level improvements. Students said one of their top efforts was expanding tasting and menu options to improve the cafeteria experience.
SACE members described meetings with child nutrition staff, facilities and the IT team. One student said the council sampled menu items with child nutrition directors and learned the state’s requirement that a fruit or vegetable accompany meals. Another described feedback to the IT team about GoGuardian filters, new Chromebooks, classroom screen-time and processes for unblocking teacher-assigned videos.
The students also highlighted facilities priorities: regular cleaning of water fountains to remove cobwebs, more e-bike racks to prevent property damage and attention to vandalism and worn playground equipment. Looking ahead, the council proposed a districtwide refillable water-bottle campaign to reduce single-use plastic.
"For the first time, we are sharing the final design" of a student-created "portrait of a graduate," Jazelle Perez Lopez said, describing photography and marketing-class collaborations that produced the design. Superintendent Wesley congratulated the students and handed out certificates.
The council said its work also contributed to policy changes this year, including revisions to district grading and smart-device protocols. The board acknowledged the presentation and recognized students for their service.
