Commissioners shorten volunteer fire interlocal agreement, soften funding language

Mills County commissioners voted May 26 to approve an interlocal agreement with the local volunteer fire department after agreeing to two edits requested during the meeting: shorten the agreement term from 10 years to five years and change clause language so the county "may" provide funding rather than "will" provide funding, subject to budgeting and approval.
Commissioner Williams said he preferred a five-year term rather than a 10-year term so future courts would not be locked into long-term commitments. "I would be more for the five years," Williams said. Commissioners also discussed the funding clause and—after consulting the county attorney—agreed the wording should be permissive ("may") to align the agreement with annual budgeting processes.
The court approved the revised interlocal agreement unanimously.
Next steps: staff will finalize the interlocal agreement with the agreed edits and the sheriff's office and volunteer fire department will proceed under the revised terms.
