Commissioners approve box-car salvage, multiple surplus items and secure disposal of sheriff's hardware

Mills County commissioners approved multiple consent and property-disposition items on May 26, including a public-notice declaration of a derelict box car on County Road 189 as salvage, surplus declarations for county equipment to be sold at Live Oak Auction, and secure disposal of older sheriff's department camera equipment and hard drives.

Commissioners discussed accounts-payable coding and asked county staff (Jackie) to change line-item wording so purchases appear under the correct budget category (repairs and supplies versus equipment). Jackie told the court she could change the descriptions in the system before issuing checks. The court approved the accounts-payable package with the noted wording changes.

The court then approved a public notice to declare the box car salvage and motions to declare a 1986 Case tractor, a steel grid roller with hydraulics and a 2007 Chevrolet 1500 pickup as surplus to be auctioned. "It's just a big steel grid roller ... we've got every precinct has one of these. So we don't need that many," Commissioner Williams said in explaining the surplus declaration.

The sheriff confirmed older camera equipment and hard drives—some more than a decade old—had been boxed and that hard drives were erased; the court approved contracting for secure disposal and approved the disposal motion.

All consent and surplus items were approved unanimously.

Next steps: staff will update accounts-payable descriptions, remove surplus items from inventory and schedule Live Oak Auction listings; county will contract for secure disposal of electronics.
