Council authorizes application for SHPO "Paul Bruhn" revitalization grant to rehabilitate city Beach House

The council voted to allow staff to apply for a State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) Paul Bruhn revitalization grant for repairs to the city-owned Beach House, with a required 15% local match.
Kathy, speaking for the project team, told the council the grant request would be for $84,360 and that the city is being asked to provide a 15% match of $14,887.50. She said the grant estimate includes a 10% contingency, putting the total project cost at $99,247.50. "Because the city owns the building, we feel like it's the responsibility to really put that effort in and make sure that this beautiful historic structure is repaired and put in good order again," Kathy said.
Staff confirmed that the grant requires city oversight and that staff involvement has already occurred during structural assessments. A staff speaker said ongoing engineering reports will be reviewed as interim reports are filed, and that the work should increase the usable capacity of the Beach House by addressing weight limits and other structural constraints.
A motion to allow the application and provide the required match was made, seconded and carried. The city will serve as the project owner and provide in-kind or direct oversight as the grant application and, if awarded, the project proceed.
