Committee to review 'publishable' survey results; consultant offers web appendix or polished print option

The Cumberland Comprehensive Plan Committee heard an update on the public survey and an outline for publishing its results on Tuesday. Paul, the project consultant, said the raw survey data are final and that staff will deliver a "publishable draft" for committee review in about two weeks.
Paul told members the team has two publication choices: produce a highly formatted report integrated into the comp plan (he compared that to a "Ferrari") or post the full results as a web appendix with a simpler printed summary (the "Honda" option). He recommended the committee wait to finalize the format until after the second round of public engagement, so the published materials reflect that added input.
Why it matters: the publishable version will be the public-facing record of who responded, the major trends and the engagement methods used. Several members noted the survey appears skewed toward older residents and asked staff to provide cross-tabulations by age and income to clarify which groups were underrepresented.
Paul said the team will also clean up the visual presentation (sorting zip-code tables, adding maps or heat maps) so results are easier for residents to interpret. He said the consultant team can produce an InDesign-ready layout if the committee directs it, but that option requires more time and budget.
Procedural note: the committee agreed to schedule a detailed review of the publishable draft on Aug. 28; if approved, staff plans to post the results to the town website the following week.
At the start of the meeting, the committee approved the July 10 minutes by voice vote; a motion on the July 24 minutes was withdrawn and deferred because some members had not attended that meeting.
