The Sheffield City Council on Nov. 17 authorized the procurement of a virtual private server (VPS) hosting package to support the city's new website, email and resident platforms and to prepare for migration to a federally verified .gov domain.
City staff presented a cost comparison and recommended an annual package totaling $1,655.64, which includes a web host edition control panel, VPS hosting term pricing and a web‑security add‑on. Council adopted a resolution capping spending at $1,655.64 and authorizing the mayor to select the VPS term that best fits city needs and to oversee the technical migration once the federal .gov approval is received.
The presenter said the VPS will let the city host multiple municipal domains and rapidly deploy web forms and automations without recurring third‑party license fees; he also offered to donate several redevelopment and library domain names he owns to the city. The resolution requires the mayor to report back to council with a summary of the final procurement and term selection at the next regular meeting following purchase.
Council approved the resolution by voice vote after a second. The finance and administration committee composition and related committee appointments were read into the record earlier in the meeting.
