Freetown Select Board adopts FEMA‑approved Hazard Mitigation Plan; plan to be submitted to MEMA/FEMA

The Freetown Select Board voted May 19 to adopt the town’s Hazard Mitigation Plan, completing a final administrative step after FEMA’s conditional approval.
Town planner Nancy summarized the plan’s development, credited staff and community outreach and noted the town had completed a rigorous public‑input process. Consultant Craig Pereira told the board FEMA had reviewed the plan draft submitted in late 2024 and approved it pending formal adoption by the Select Board.
With adoption, Nancy said the town will insert a signed resolution into the plan packet and resubmit it to MEMA; MEMA will forward the material to FEMA. Once FEMA issues the final compliance letter the plan will be in effect for five years and will enable eligibility for hazard‑mitigation project funding in the event of a declared disaster as well as pre‑event mitigation project grants.
A motion to adopt the plan and execute the resolution passed unanimously. Board members thanked staff and volunteers who assisted with the community outreach and drafting.
