Seekonk reviews Phase Two progress at senior center; state elevator inspection passed

Select Board members on Wednesday reviewed detailed construction progress for phase two of the senior center at 540 Arcade Avenue, where staff outlined asbestos abatement, elevator installation, HVAC and electrical upgrades, and ADA-compliant restroom work.

The Human Services director, Britney (first name only in the record), walked the board through a photo slideshow showing demolition, the elevator pit excavation and the elevator installation. She told the board that the state elevator inspector conducted a final inspection on May 13 and that the project passed, allowing limited public access and enabling the department to host an open house.

The presentation noted work that included removal of aging wall‑mounted air conditioners, brick restoration, installation of new windows and insulation, replacement of bathroom floors and piping, reinforcement for future audiovisual equipment, and delivery of new furniture. Contractors on site — including general contractor Kevin Pereira and electrical subcontractors — were credited for completing technically challenging tasks such as maneuvering elevator components through an existing doorway.

Committee members and staff emphasized that the building’s lower and upper levels are now ADA-compliant for the renovated section. Britney said the town continues to document the work with photos and will provide follow-up reports at future meetings as the project moves toward final completion and closeout.

The board thanked the building committee and contractors for the progress and noted another construction update will be presented before the end of the fiscal year.
