Shafter proclaims March as American Red Cross Month; local chapter highlights wildfire response and volunteer needs

The Shafter City Council presented a proclamation recognizing March as American Red Cross Month on March 4 and invited local chapter representatives to speak.
Hector Vasquez, executive director of the Kern and Eastern Sierra American Red Cross chapter, accepted the proclamation and described the chapter’s response to recent wildfires and to two local structure fires this year. He thanked local volunteers who assisted in metropolitan wildfire response and detailed local services the Red Cross provides, including emergency sheltering, hotel placements, short-term financial aid and case management for affected families. Vasquez also highlighted blood-donation needs and a smoke-alarm installation program that furnishes and installs alarms for residents free of charge.
Dion Young, a board member and local news director, echoed thanks to volunteers and encouraged community members to learn about volunteer and board opportunities.
The council received the proclamation and thanked the presenters.
