Madison County names Gavin Helm as EMS chief; Helm says agency is "healthy"

The Madison County Board of Supervisors on Monday introduced Gavin Helm as the county’s new EMS chief, a position Helm said he began effectively on May 21.
Board staff said Helm was selected from a nine-applicant pool and thanked members of the interview panel. "We are now proud to present our next EMS chief," staff said during the announcement.
Addressing the board, Helm said he was "thankful" for the appointment and described the service as "healthy." He said he would post the deputy chief position immediately and expected staffing changes to begin July 1. Helm listed priorities that include replacing positions likely to change with the transition, advancing blood programs and other procedures, and maintaining collaboration across ranks.
"I am a very, very much a servant leader," Helm said, adding he planned to balance frontline feedback with fiscal demands. Helm also accepted a recommendation from staff that he fill the county's unexpired voting seat on the regional EMS Council Advisory Committee through Dec. 31, 2029; the board voted to appoint him to that role.
The board took the appointment and the EMS-council appointment by voice vote. Staff said Helm will be available to lawmakers and departments as the county develops legislative priorities tied to EMS operations.
A public hearing and subsequent board business followed; staff said they will coordinate follow-up on Helm's agenda items and staffing announcements with county administration.
