Garden City council unanimously approves nomination of Lieutenant Domney as police chief

The Garden City Council voted unanimously to approve Resolution 1253-26, authorizing the mayor to appoint Lieutenant Domney as the city’s next police chief effective Aug. 5, 2026.
A city official who introduced the nomination highlighted Domney’s long service and training, telling the council he "started with Garden City in 2010" and completed executive training and extensive accreditation work for other departments. The presenter said Domney helped assemble the city’s successful accreditation files and has been involved in weekly budget monitoring since becoming lieutenant in August 2023.
Lieutenant Domney addressed the council at the podium, saying, "I just want to thank everyone for the support that they've given me throughout this. It's been... a humbling experience really to step into big shoes." He thanked his mentors and said he hopes to build on the department’s work.
Council members expressed broad support before the roll call. The clerk recorded Council Member Paige, Council Member Rasmmanson and Council Member Carver Herbert voting yes on the motion to approve the resolution.
The appointment will become effective when Chief Stanba retires on Aug. 4; a swearing-in ceremony was planned for the council’s first August meeting. The council did not discuss any alternative candidates at the meeting.
