City Council accepts state ‘‘Safe and Senior Safe’’ grant for fire‑safety education

The Holyoke City Council voted to accept a FY26 state "Safe and Senior Safe" grant and authorized establishment of a fund to account for the receipts. The council referenced Mass. General Laws Chapter 44, Section 53A in the motion to accept the grant.
"This is a grant that we get every year from the state," said the Chief, explaining the funds support fire‑safety education. He said Lieutenant Pelchat will use the money to buy educational materials — "coloring books and different things" — for school programs and youth events, and to supply materials and workshops at elderly living facilities and the senior center.
A councilor asked how residents obtain smoke and carbon‑monoxide alarms mentioned under the "senior safe" portion of the grant. According to the chief, residents must call Lieutenant Pelchat to schedule an appointment; the Red Cross also provides equipment and assists with installations.
The council moved to accept the grant, the motion was seconded, and members approved it by voice vote. The chief and councilors thanked staff for the work on the program.
The action authorizes the city to accept and account for the grant funds and directs the fire department to administer the education and senior assistance activities described.
