At its May 26 meeting the Huntington Co Com Sch Corp board approved a suite of capital and administrative items including locker-room renovations, a pickup-lane redesign, secure vestibule installations, and a change order for HVAC work at Salamon Elementary, and approved personnel and handbook actions.
Capital projects: The board approved the Huntington North High School varsity locker-room renovation (2022 bond funds), a Riverview pickup-lane project (2026 capital funds, including land-survey and utility-locate costs), and secure-vestibule work at multiple elementary schools funded from the 2025 GO bond. Trustees also approved Change Order #2 for Salamon Elementary’s HVAC replacement (2023 bond) to cover additional mechanical work and removal of an old fuel-oil tank; the added contractor cost presented was approximately $180,000.
Personnel, handbooks and consent agenda: The board approved several handbook items and personnel recommendations. Mrs. Babcock presented first- and final-reading materials for classified, substitute and administrator handbooks (classified first reading; substitute and administrator handbooks approved). The consent agenda included a recommended 2% compensation increase for administrative and classified staff effective July 1; trustees approved the consent agenda and later approved a separate personnel report vote (E7) with a 5–0–1 result (five yes, one abstention).
Financials and other MOU: Mrs. Babcock reviewed the April 2026 financial report; the education fund was near budgeted expectations, but the operations fund faces timing and cash-balance pressures including a large natural-gas delivery bill and an estimated $3.2 million circuit-breaker reduction. Trustees approved the April financial report. The board also approved an MOU with HCTA using Title II-A funds to pay certified staff $40/hour (including FICA) and classified staff $15/hour for summer professional development.
Why it matters: The capital approvals continue bond-funded facility improvements and safety upgrades; handbook and compensation approvals affect staff pay and policy. The financial report flagged structural budget pressures that may affect future decisions.
Next steps: Contractors will proceed with approved projects; administration will circulate finalized handbooks, publish financial follow-ups and monitor operations-fund projections.
