Staff briefed the committee May 12 about a 5.28-acre parcel behind the post office that has been identified as a possible site for a future police headquarters. The asking price provided by the seller is $4.1 million; staff reported the city’s appraisal came in at $1.9 million.
Mayor Paige Brown said the parcel’s location provides access to South Water, Route 109, Main Street and 386 and asked council members to give initial feedback before staff pursues any negotiation or formal offer. The mayor noted the parcel’s owner told staff to present a best number to start discussions but also warned that a third party has a right of first refusal on the property.
Council members discussed alternative approaches, including continuing to evaluate other parcels along the city’s periphery and maintaining multiple precincts rather than centralizing operations in a single large headquarters. Chief Andy and other staff noted Gallatin currently operates multiple facilities (headquarters, CID annex, training range and satellite locations) and that the city is also considering precinct models used by larger cities.
No motion or offer was made. Staff will return with additional information if council wishes to pursue an acquisition or make an offer.
