Wake County board adopts 2026-27 and 2027-28 school calendars after brief debate

The Wake County Board of Education adopted several academic calendars for 2026-27 and 2027-28 on April 7 after a district presentation and brief member discussion.
District calendar staff presented an updated 2026-27 multi-track year-round calendar that removed banked days and three 2026-27 early-college calendars; the board voted to adopt each item individually. Motions to adopt the multi-track year-round calendar were made by Mr. Haggerty and seconded by Vice Chair Hershey; the board approved the calendar by voice/assent.
The board also adopted the 2027-28 multi-track year-round, modified year-round and the 2027-28 traditional calendar (version 6C) following separate motions and seconds. Members noted minor corrections and discussed religious holidays during the traditional-calendar consideration; Dr. Joe and others welcomed calendar flexibility to recognize holidays such as Yom Kippur and Eid.
Ms. Tamani Anderson-Powell, who oversees calendar planning, presented the options and reminded members that the calendar committee meets virtually and welcomes participation.
Outcome: all calendars presented that evening were adopted by the board during the meeting; votes were recorded by assent and no recorded roll-call opposition was announced in the minutes provided.
