The task force representative told commissioners the FY2027 plan is unchanged from prior years and reiterated the group’s goals: reduce motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, cut alcohol‑ and drug‑related crashes, injuries and fatalities, support high‑visibility enforcement, expand public education and strengthen collaboration among law enforcement, prosecutors, public health, schools and community partners. “Nothing has changed in our plan from the prior years,” the presenter said.
On finances, the presenter said the task force expects to carry over approximately $16,000 and that its recurring revenue comes primarily from driver’s license reinstatement fees: a $200 reinstatement fee, with counties receiving half of that amount. The presenter described House Bill 132 as a statewide pool of reinstatement fees that is divided among counties that maintain a DUI Task Force. The plan’s estimated expenditures listed training and travel, media and education, safe‑ride programs, occasional overtime for enforcement, and special projects such as an annual alcohol‑free Super Bowl party for students.
The presenter highlighted occupant‑protection work, saying seatbelt use reduces blunt‑force trauma even when alcohol is a contributing factor to crashes, and said the task force will continue to back primary seatbelt legislation. The presenter also noted the task force’s support for school resource officer membership and for a sheriff’s office car camera purchase intended to aid officer safety and evidence gathering.
After a short discussion and no public comment, a commissioner moved to approve the DUI Task Force meeting calendar, contact list, budget and annual plan for FY2027; another commissioner seconded the motion and the board approved it by voice vote. Commissioners and the presenter signed the approved documents before the meeting moved to the next agenda item.
What’s next: The task force will submit its FY2027 plan to the Montana Department of Transportation; the presenter said plans are due June 1 and are delivered to the governor’s office for the state process.
