Abington board recognizes student leadership and spring sports, and outlines 250th‑anniversary K–12 programming

The Abington Board of School Directors opened its May 26 meeting by recognizing students who participated in Montgomery County Intermediate Unit programs including Dreaming Forward and Voices for Education. Christy Ruth (MCIU program administrator) described multi‑year student leadership programs and noted a June 2 advocacy trip to Harrisburg.
Athletic leaders then highlighted spring sports honors across teams: the boys volleyball squad (10‑7 regular season), boys lacrosse (13‑6), girls track and field (multiple district and state qualifiers including Ella Swan Young’s PIAA state 200m placing), tennis (Liberty Division champions; eight all‑league selections), softball (26‑run game noted), and girls flag football (12‑2, Suburban One Liberty Division champions). Coaches and advisers and a number of named student athletes were recognized on stage.
Administrators also announced a district‑wide semiquincentennial program, 'ASD Celebrates the USA', spanning Memorial Day through Veterans Day with interdisciplinary lessons, community exhibitions (elementary artwork on public display July 2 at the Abington Township Library), a secondary creative writing contest, and voter registration events at the high school prior to Election Day. The initiative will be guided by a superintendent’s 250th anniversary committee and emphasizes historical complexity, inclusion and civic leadership.
Board members congratulated students and thanked staff and advisers for their work.
