Acushnet selects lateral hire Emmanuel Mateus as patrol officer

The Acushnet Board of Selectmen unanimously appointed Emmanuel "Manny" Mateus as a patrol officer at its April 14 meeting.
Police Chief Gary Coppa introduced Mateus to the board, outlining his law-enforcement background beginning in 2014 with security work for Southcoast Health, followed by service as a deputy sheriff with the Bristol County Sheriff's Office and part-time and later full-time officer posts in Rochester. Chief Coppa described Mateus as a certified electronic weapons instructor and certified firearms instructor and recommended his lateral transfer to Acushnet.
Board members praised the department's recent recruiting results and moved to appoint Mateus at step four. The motion carried; the board described the hire as a quick way to fill staffing gaps caused by retirements, deployments and anticipated departures.
Chief Coppa and selectmen thanked officers and staff who carried out background checks and recruitment. The administration will complete onboarding and payroll steps so Mateus can assume patrol duties.
