Code enforcement, parks master plan and lakefront rules highlighted at Wolverine Lake meeting

At a regular meeting the Wolverine Lake Planning Commission received several reports: a code enforcement officer described day-to-day enforcement challenges for lakefront properties, parks staff outlined a parks and recreation master-plan update and upcoming events, the Zoning Board of Appeals described a pending dimensional-variance case, and commissioners discussed recent geese-control efforts and a new shed appearing too close to a seawall.
Commissioners said the code enforcement officer has increased the detail of his monthly reports and used photos and video to show waterfront compliance issues; commissioners noted this made it easier to see enforcement activity. The commission also heard that the BMX track is largely completed and that the parks team is preparing an updated survey and a parks and recreation master-plan process with consultant Chris Nordstrom. Parks staff said the summer farmers market will run weekly from June through September with hours to be finalized and listed other seasonal events including a May 24 5K and a June 21 dog show.
The Zoning Board of Appeals reported a dimensional-variance application for a deck encroaching into the front-yard setback but said the case has been delayed while the ZBA attempts to obtain a quorum; the item is expected to be scheduled at a future meeting. Commissioners also discussed recent water-management work to reduce resident complaints about geese; some members reported crews removed nests and they have observed fewer goslings this season. Staff added that shrink-wrap recycling bags for waterfront residents will be available again this year.
Finally, a commissioner reported seeing a recently built shed approximately 20 feet from a seawall that appears to conflict with lakefront accessory-structure rules. Staff (Tabitha) said the office will include a reminder in the end-of-month newsletter, consider an email blast, and post guidance on the website and Facebook page to alert waterfront property owners about accessory-structure restrictions.
No formal board action was taken on these reports; staff follow-up will focus on communications and scheduling the ZBA variance when a quorum is available.
