Somers authorizes bids for Parkway Drive water main, OKs small tank budget increase and personnel updates

The Somers Town Board on Oct. 2 approved a series of water and personnel items intended to shore up the town’s water infrastructure and staffing. The board voted to increase the Ross Drive tank capital budget by $50,466 and authorized Wood and Current Engineering to prepare a bid package to connect two dead-end mains on Parkway Drive.
Engineer Steve Robbins told the board the design and permitting for the Parkway Drive connection were completed and that the work would be about 200 linear feet; he estimated roughly $100,000 for the construction cost as a ballpark figure, noting actual costs will be set when bids are opened.
The board also requested New York State civil-service status changes for two water-and-sewer employees — Philip Qu and Daniel Shehan — moving them from competitive provisional to non-competitive permanent titles effective Oct. 1, per a memo from Frederick McQuillin, superintendent of water and sewer. A resignation from the Historic Properties Board (Ken Bond, effective Sept. 16) and acceptance of Howard Vinberg’s retirement from his Park and Recreation foreman role (effective Oct. 1) were also recorded.
All listed motions passed on voice votes recorded in the work session. The town will solicit bids for the Parkway Drive work; no contract award was made at the Oct. 2 meeting.
