A cohort of student interns from Justin Garza High School presented the year’s peer‑education work to the Central Unified Board, highlighting Narcan and CPR training, outreach events and survey findings showing gaps in student awareness of on‑campus wellness services.
Jablin Deon, speaking for the interns, said the peer‑led program emphasizes harm reduction and partner work with schools and health departments. “Over the years, this program has expanded to six school districts across nine campuses in California,” Deon said, and described Narcan training that taught interns to recognize and respond to opioid overdoses.
Interns detailed school activities including World Mental Health Day tabling, Red Ribbon Week demonstrations, fentanyl‑awareness events partnered with community groups, and a town hall on opioid prevention. Ashen summarized a student survey that found many students were not aware of wellness centers or the resources available on campus and said students requested more visible, accessible supports.
Administrators thanked the interns for their work. Assistant Superintendent Mlennon and Dr. Lopez recognized the interns’ role in advancing mental‑health awareness and noted collaboration on a forthcoming cell‑phone policy presentation and the district’s involvement in program support.
The presentation concluded with the interns thanking district staff and administrators for support and expressing hope that future cohorts would continue partnerships to expand wellness and harm‑reduction efforts across Central Unified.
