County approves SEIU addendum to boost roads-and-bridges pay, aim to retain CDL drivers

The Lackawanna County Salary Board approved an SEIU contract addendum for the Roads & Bridges department, retroactive to Jan. 1, 2026. Officials said the addendum raises salaries across the department and raises the starting salary for new full-time hires to make the county more competitive in recruiting certified CDL drivers.
Chief of Staff Brian Jeffers said the change was anticipated in the 2026 budget and that higher pay should help the county fill key roles, reduce reliance on contracting and save the county money over time by having a full staff for snow removal, road maintenance and other essential services. The addendum was presented as the final piece of the SEIU contract negotiations for the department.
The motion was approved by voice vote.
