City reports 18% communitywide emissions drop from 2023; operations down 5% in 2024

"In 2024 we saw an 18% reduction in communitywide emissions compared to 2023 and a 24% reduction from our 2011 baseline," supplemental sustainability coordinator Aaron Marin said, noting the change was largely driven by green power purchases in the commercial sector, reduced building energy consumption and lower vehicle miles traveled.
Laida Harris, the parks sustainability program administrator, described municipal facility improvements that reduced electricity about 16% and natural gas about 11% at targeted facilities through operational changes such as HVAC scheduling, weekend shutdowns and lighting controls. Staff said those measures reduced energy‑use intensity and helped prepare for compliance with the Washington clean building performance standard, which includes deadlines tied to building size and use.
Councilmembers asked for clearer dashboards and an action‑by‑action status update showing what initiatives are on track or delayed; staff said an updated sustainability dashboard and an annual action report are planned for later in the year.
