Redmond’s sustainability staff told the Committee for Parks & Environment Sustainability that the city was selected for a Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund award worth $50,000, which staff said will be used as micragrants to fund youth‑led climate projects.
"Redmond is one of 300 cities from across the globe that has been selected for a youth climate action fund grant of $50,000," a staff presenter said. The grant program will distribute funds in micrants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to youth-led projects that benefit the Redmond community; successful completion of the first round would qualify the city for a second $50,000 award in 2027.
Staff said outreach will be coordinated with schools, nonprofits and community partners; each micrgrant must be administered through a fiscal‑agent nonprofit. Councilmembers asked about outreach to schools and community‑based organizations and whether the selection of Redmond reflected a competitive application process; staff said the application was brief and that Redmond was one of three Washington cities selected for this round.
Staff asked the committee to move the item to the June 2 consent agenda so the council can accept the funding if awarded.
