Huron council approves sale of condemned 531 Berlin Road parcel to private buyer to return it to tax rolls

Huron City Council on May 12 adopted Ordinance 2026‑12 authorizing the sale of city‑owned property at 531 Berlin Road (Erie County parcel 42‑01067.000) to Fenton Property Services LLC and declaring an emergency.
City Manager Hamilton said the building was condemned in 2023, the city demolished the unsafe structure at city expense, and after three sheriff’s sale attempts the city claimed the property. Hamilton said the city removed back taxes, registered the parcel and solicited offers; three offers were received and the council considered the highest/most favorable for $25,450 plus closing costs. "Our goal was to sell it and recoup the money that we'd spent on it. We're not here to do real estate," Hamilton said.
Council voted to adopt the ordinance as an emergency measure to return the parcel to the tax rolls; staff said proceeds and closure would be handled through the city manager’s office and legal as required.
