Huron council approves 10‑year, $550,896 Axon contract to consolidate police cameras, tasers and evidence software

The Huron City Council voted May 12 to adopt Resolution 45‑2026 authorizing a 10‑year contract with Axon Enterprise Inc. to consolidate the police department’s body‑worn cameras, in‑car cameras, tasers and evidence‑management software in an aggregate amount not to exceed $550,896.49.
Police Chief Gram told council the consolidation will standardize equipment across the department and include technology refreshes every 2½ years. "Body cams on police officers are not going away anytime soon," Gram said, adding the contract bundles devices and software and will help keep officers on up‑to‑date equipment.
Captain Hampton explained how equipment replacements will be phased: "Every 2 and 1/2 years we get each of those pieces of equipment updated… all these devices are just like your cell phones. Batteries degrade. Technology gets better." He said that feature is included in the contract.
City staff estimated the 10‑year deal will save about $22,000 per year compared with current, staggered contracts, and the contract contains a termination clause allowing the city to exit if funds are not appropriated. Councilmembers questioned cost and coverage; Chief Gram and staff confirmed maintenance and future upgrades are covered by the agreement.
Council approved the measure by roll‑call vote. The contract will require future administrative steps for execution and appropriation as provided in the termination section discussed at the meeting.
The city’s reported savings estimate and the contract’s term and maximum aggregate cost were presented at the council meeting; the formal contract documents will be available once fully executed.
