Board recognizes paraprofessional award winner and showcases student leadership programs

At the May 20 meeting the Schiller Park School District 81 Board of Education presented a recognition to Marcella Baron, identified in the meeting as a Spanish bilingual paraprofessional at Kennedy School, for receiving an Illinois “Those Who Excel” award in the educational service category.
The board showed photos from Baron’s awards banquet and invited her family forward for pictures. Baron thanked colleagues and family, saying the support of the school community allows her to serve students with “heart and compassion.” A board member said, “If that’s not an Excel winner, I don’t know what is.”
The board also introduced a district video showcasing student leadership programs across all three schools. The presentation described Kennedy ambassadors, Washington’s “Claw Crew” and Lincoln’s Rising Leaders program; students complete application processes, obtain teacher recommendations, and help run events such as orientation, assemblies and after-school activities.
Short clips of students played for the board, with students saying they enjoy making friends, helping lost students, and motivating peers. Board members praised the programs for giving students early practice with reference letters and applications and said the programs help build a culture of belonging.
The board thanked principals, assistant principals and teachers for creating opportunities for student leadership and noted detailed end-of-year school data will be shared at the June meeting.
