Public commenter urges district support for county 988 awareness campaign and postvention coordinator

An unnamed public commenter told the Clarion-Limestone Area SD board that a county suicide-prevention task force convened last September produced recommendations the commenter said should be supported by local school districts, including hiring or contracting a postvention coordinator, creating a community outreach and education coordinator role, and launching a 988 awareness campaign.

The commenter — who said they served six years on a different school board and helped recruit stakeholders including CCR (the county-contracted mental-health provider), a representative from Butler VA, and local school and faith leaders — described the emotional and logistical challenges families and school communities face after a suicide and said a postvention coordinator would be a single point of contact for coroners, families and schools. The speaker said some county and opioid-trust funds might cover part of the work and that the task force is seeking partners, not asking the district to immediately disburse money. "We're hoping to do a 988 awareness campaign…I'm asking you to hear it, not to answer today," the commenter said, and asked the board to consider earmarking $5,000 when the district's budget process allows.

Board members acknowledged the presentation and several members said the district's internal programs (including a Hope Squad peer-support program) and staff training could complement county efforts. One board member noted the district's budget process and that any allocation outside the adopted budget would have to be handled later. Staff also said the county task force has been in touch with state Department of Human Services and that the county and other partners would provide messaging and support if the district chose to participate.

The public commenter named partner organizations and individuals involved in the county task force (CCR, Butler VA, and a Dr. McDevik from the local school system) and emphasized the value of tracking 988 call volume to measure campaign effectiveness. The board did not vote on the request at the meeting; staff and board members said they would consider the ask during budget discussions and when a specific proposal is submitted for formal consideration.
