Valparaiso Community Schools honors longtime staff and retirees

Valparaiso Community Schools honored a slate of retiring employees at the start of its regular board meeting, recognizing years of service across classroom instruction, food service, transportation and facilities.
Superintendent Dr. McCall opened the recognition program by saying the district — “made up of almost 900 employees” — relies on certified and classified staff to serve students from the bus stop through extracurricular activities. The board and district officials individually recognized retirees including Daisy Alberto Martinez (30 years, Porter County Educational Services and TJ Middle School); Julie Bennett (32 years, buildings and grounds coordinator); Angie Coyle (28½ years, second-grade teacher at Memorial); Joyce Crowe (42 years in food service); Basil George (7½ years, bus driver); Tim Henderson (33 years, grounds); Herb Hoer (36 years, math teacher and longtime coach); Jane Jones (27 years, STEM teacher); and several others.
Speakers and colleagues highlighted concrete contributions: Martinez’s work to support students who did not speak English, Bennett’s decades responding to facilities emergencies, Crowe’s long food-service reliability, and Herb Hoer’s coaching and classroom leadership. Several retirees unable to attend were recognized in absentia.
The board invited families and colleagues to join the tributes and closed the recognition segment before proceeding to regular business.
