Hanover Park approves $37,156 purchase of 12 radar speed signs funded by DCEO grant

The Hanover Park Village Board voted on May 21 to authorize a purchase order to Traffic Logic Corporation for 12 radar speed signs and accessories not to exceed $37,156, with the interim village manager authorized to execute necessary documents.

Staff said 11 of the units would be placed at school locations where speed patterns justify additional attention, and one would be sited 250 feet south of Ontario Road at a known S-curve. Funding for the purchase comes from a DCEO grant through the State of Illinois, staff said.

The police chief described the devices as bracket-mounted and portable, useful as a ‘‘force multiplier’’ around schools. ‘‘Eighty percent of the time, 10 to 20 percent immediate speed reductions,’’ the chief said, describing observed short-term behavior change from similar signs. Staff added the signs are cloud-connected and can report speed and time-of-day patterns to inform potential enforcement details; they contain no camera and provide no automated enforcement.

Trustees asked whether grant terms would prevent resale; staff said that resale would likely be restricted by the grant. After discussion, the board approved the motion on roll call. Reported roll-call responses during the item included Trustee Biancalana (yes), Trustee Gutierrez (yes), Trustee Porter (yes), Trustee Cangelosi (yes) and Trustee Alba (no). The motion was recorded as passing.

Next steps: staff will finalize purchase documents and schedule deployment of the units once vendor delivery and installation logistics are confirmed.
