Smithville R‑II honors students for FFA, music and Special Olympics achievements

At its May 1 meeting, the Smithville R‑II Board of Education recognized students and staff for several spring achievements. Emma Marshall was introduced as a sophomore selected to attend the 2026 Missouri AgriBusiness Academy after advancing through a written application and interview process.
"Emma Marshall has been selected to attend the 2026 Missouri AgriBusiness Academy," the superintendent said, describing the weeklong program and noting Emma will represent the Academy at the Missouri State Fair, Legislative Day in Jefferson City and the FFA State Convention next spring. Emma told the board, "Okay, I'm Emma Marshall. I'm a sophomore for two more days."
The board also recognized students who earned exemplary ratings at the district music festival and qualified for the state competition, including named qualifiers who were unable to attend. Smithville High and Middle School students and their Unified Partners were honored for participating in the Special Olympics and Job Olympics; staff described activities ranging from basketball and track skills to job‑skill tasks such as washing dishes and cleaning cars. Mrs. McDonald described the district's Champs mentoring program that pairs middle‑school helpers with participants and noted high‑school volunteers also support events.
Superintendent Dr. Moss and other administrators took an extended opportunity to thank principals, teachers and support staff across the district for the end‑of‑year events, graduations and staff recognition activities during Teacher Appreciation Week.
What’s next: Recognized students and guests were invited to stay for the remainder of the meeting; the board expressed appreciation for staff organizing end‑of‑year activities.
