Zoning board denies variance for 8-foot woven deer fence and excess paving

The Riverhead Zoning Board voted Jan. 8 to deny an area-variance application that would have allowed an 8-foot woven-wire deer fence and raised impervious surface coverage to 24.04%, above the town maximum of 15%.
Reading from a written determination the board said it "carefully reviewed and considered all of the testimony and evidence" and concluded the benefit of granting the variance was outweighed by detriment to the community's health, safety and welfare. The board then moved, seconded and carried a motion to deny the relief in its entirety.
The action drew audible applause from members of the public in the room. The board recorded the roll call after the motion; one member was absent.
No further action was taken on that application at the meeting.
The board's written determination is on file with the clerk.
