Ferguson Township’s Board of Supervisors adopted a proclamation recognizing May 2026 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and encouraged residents to celebrate the history, culture and contributions of these communities.
The proclamation noted regional events — including the Apida Festival and exhibits of student art responding to questions about an inclusive future — and reaffirmed the township’s opposition to racism and xenophobia.
Nalani Krishnan Kouti, a State College Borough council member and founding member of the Panipeda Circle, described this year’s national theme, “Power in Unity — Strengthening Communities Together,” and invited residents to view student art on display at borough and library locations.
Resident Sha Prasad Wia reflected on belonging and citizenship, noting historical milestones in immigration law and saying a pending federal action and a Supreme Court case could be ‘‘a test to belonging’’ for some communities. Resident Hen Kim highlighted festival activities that engaged children and families and noted local museum exhibitions featuring diasporic artists.
The board recessed briefly for photos and then adopted the proclamation by voice vote. Several supervisors thanked the organizers and attendees for their work and attendance.
