The City Council on May 12 unanimously accepted a staff presentation and moved to implement a refreshed Discover Downey destination brand aimed at driving tourism, supporting local businesses and improving investor outreach.
Economic Development Director Austin Ramirez presented the new identity developed with design firm Kilter: a mid‑century script paired with bold typography, a coral/navy/mustard tourism palette and a teal variant for economic development uses. Ramirez said the brand is meant to be distinct from the municipal logo, to avoid confusion, and to help the city market dining, entertainment and visitor attractions. He showed social mockups and trade‑show treatments designed to increase digital engagement and attract investment.
Councilmembers praised the design, noted its alignment with Downey’s mid‑century history and supported an immediate rollout to capitalize on upcoming regional events such as the city’s World Cup fan zone and the LA28 Olympic Games. Mayor Claudia Foretta said she looks forward to growing the platform’s audience.
Outcome: Council voted unanimously to receive and file the brand update and authorized staff to begin implementation.
Next steps: staff will begin social‑media activation, marketing partnerships with local businesses, and targeted promotions tied to regional and national events.
