Main Street Connect gets council sign-off for Holiday Festival street closure, announces downtown decorations and cleanup

The City of Portland City Council approved a street-closure request from the Main Street Committee for a Holiday Festival on Nov. 16, allowing vendors and downtown activities on East Main Street between Meridian and Harrison from 2 to 8 p.m.
Reda-Theurer Miller, representing the Main Street Committee and Main Street Connect, said the committee plans to decorate the planters on the Arch Bridge, install banners and Christmas lights downtown and participate in a fall cleanup with Asbury Church on Nov. 10. "The Holiday Festival will host a variety of vendors for the holiday season," Reda-Theurer Miller said. She added that in late August the committee sent registration forms to downtown business owners to collect information about their properties and intentions, which will help the committee target beautification and business assistance.
Council members approved the street closure on a motion by Council member Ron May, seconded by Council member Matt Goldsworthy; the roll-call vote was unanimous. City staff will coordinate required permits and traffic control for the closure.
Main Street Connect’s outreach and the scheduled cleanup are presented as community-led efforts to support downtown businesses and improve the public realm in time for the holiday season. The committee did not specify budget amounts or sources for decorations and cleanup work during the meeting.
