Bridgeport Fire Chief previews special-assessment outreach and recruitment after busy May

Fire Chief Smigiel told the Bridgeport Charter Township Board on June 4 that the department responded to 110 calls in May and 579 year-to-date. He thanked community supporters of the May pancake breakfast, which served more than 150 visitors and raised funds to buy reflective address signs to help firefighters locate homes and long driveways.
Smigiel said the department expects two potential new on-call firefighter candidates to begin orientation after passing medical clearance and described upcoming water-rescue training on the Cass River; he also noted the department had been deployed once this spring to assist Frankenmuth Township for a potential water rescue.
On funding, Smigiel announced three informational meetings about a proposed Fire Department Special Assessment that will appear on the Aug. 6 ballot. Meetings are scheduled June 27, July 9 and July 31 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. He encouraged residents to attend to learn more about the assessment and its purpose.
