Redevelopment authority reports nearly $1M in rehabs; commission hears landmark and firehouse updates

A representative of the redevelopment authority reported to the commission that the authority has moved 56 properties to completed or under-contract status, totaling nearly $1,000,000 in rehabilitation work in early 2026.
"I think we have 56 properties that have either been completed or under contract and that totals up to almost $1,000,000 over the first part of 2026," the redevelopment authority representative said, citing a recent $90,000 rehabilitation on West 26th Street funded with federal adhesion control funds and noting that all work using federal funds complies with the State Historic Preservation Office requirements.
On landmark nominations, Matthew said three nominations (Menor Corps, the Labor Temple and the South Erie Iron Works company building) are now before city council, where legal staff are drafting ordinances to alter zoning and declare those sites city historic landmarks. Two additional nominations (Foreman Block and the William and Mary Spencer House) received unanimous positive recommendations from the planning commission and were transmitted to city clerks for scheduling on council agendas.
Matthew also said the bureau issued an RFP to hire a consultant to research and prepare multi-document forms for city firehouses, received two strong proposals and expects to select a consultant this week or next; the selected consultant and any contract would then go to city council for ratification.
The bureau of planning and design, represented by Matthew in Jackie’s absence, also updated the commission on recent work around parks and trees following a storm: a tree removal process will be implemented in the coming weeks and fall planting schedules are being planned.
The meeting closed after a motion to adjourn from Chuck Scalise, which was seconded, and the chair declared the meeting adjourned.
