Highland council approves limited late‑night extensions for Speedway’s big races

Chief Widman said Sue Zobrist filed the special-event application after a recent race ran past 11 p.m. because weather-related delays had pushed the program late and officials stopped the race. Widman said the extension request covers the larger series races scheduled June 29; July 20 and 24; Aug. 3 and 14; and Sept. 7 and 14, 2024. Mayor Hemann emphasized the extension applies to special races only, not every night.
Councilman Frey noted the MARS and Outlaws races draw officials and large crowds—Frey said the Outlaws event will draw competitors from about 15 states—and Napper observed the events bring many visitors to town. Councilwoman Bellm moved to approve the application; the motion was seconded by Councilman Frey and passed on a unanimous roll call vote.
The council did not attach any conditions in the meeting minutes beyond restricting the change to the listed special races.
