Atkinson’s Police Station Location Committee narrowed its list of potential sites for a new police station to four locations and approved posting a land-acquisition announcement that includes a 60-day deadline during its April 1 meeting.
The meeting opened at 6:03 p.m. and began with a routine vote to accept the minutes from the March 18 meeting. "Motion to accept minutes as written" was moved by Committee member Lenny Hall and seconded by Committee member Greg Spero; the motion passed unanimously, recorded 6-0-0.
Members reported back on communications and prior action items and removed the previously discussed Second Main Street option from consideration because of cost. The committee also noted the site lacks a conveniently accessible water source, a practical constraint for the project’s utilities planning. Chair Brian Boyle communicated legal considerations related to land acquisition from Sumner Kalman, saying certain restrictions must be taken into account.
Committee members reviewed site plans supplied by the Planning Office and said locations constrained by "Open Space" zoning were eliminated, leaving four candidate sites. The committee summarized the remaining candidates as: Location A, a centralized site; Location B, the previously proposed location; Location C, a potential land-acquisition site; and Location D, on the outskirts.
Selectmen’s representative Wendy Barker proposed a land-acquisition announcement for committee review. The committee approved issuing the announcement with a 60-day deadline and agreed to post it across town channels, including the Town website, the town Facebook page, ACTV, Town Hall, the library and the community center. Committee member Greg Spero was tasked to review town fund balances for potential financing of the project.
The committee scheduled a walk-through of each candidate site and set the next meeting for April 15, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
