Residents press town on Saxon Sports Complex trees and stadium lighting; Northland solar timeline pushed

At the July 10 Town of Alfred meeting, residents urged the board to follow up on unfinished work at the Saxon Sports Complex and to clarify plans for stadium lighting.
Guest Catherine Chambers said trees committed for the complex have not been planted and urged that Alfred University be fined for the delay. Matthew Snyder reported he contacted MACE and LaChase Construction; LaChase said it was not responsible for planting and that it is finishing final grading before Alfred University will act. Supervisor Fion MacCrea said the town will continue to monitor the issue and keep the public updated.
Fred Sinclair asked about stadium lights; MacCrea said engineers reviewed a lighting study during prior discussions. Sinclair also asked about battery packs tied to the Northland solar project. MacCrea said the Northland project has been pushed back to late 2027 or early 2028 and that the town’s moratorium on solar projects provides time to study battery storage, siting and assessment rules before moving forward with a host-community agreement.
The board did not take enforcement action at the meeting; members said they will check with the county IDA and town attorney and keep residents informed.
